Traditional show with bright fireworks bursting in air

The Feast of the Redeemer in Venice is one of the city’s most important and engaging celebrations. This traditional Venetian event takes place every year in July and represents a deeply felt religious festival for the local community.

Origins and Significance The Feast of the Redeemer has ancient origins and was established to celebrate the end of the terrible plague epidemic that struck Venice in 1576. According to legend, the Venetian Doge promised to build a church dedicated to Jesus the Redeemer if the city was freed from the plague. After the epidemic ended, the tradition of the Feast of the Redeemer was born.

Preparations The celebrations begin with the construction of a temporary bridge that connects Venice to the Lido. This allows the faithful to cross the Giudecca Canal on foot, reaching the Church of the Redeemer on the Lido island. Houses along the Grand Canal and in the Giudecca area are beautifully decorated with lights and lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere that makes the city even more charming.

The Highlight The climax of the festival is the solemn mass in the Church of the Redeemer. The faithful gather to pray and give thanks for the liberation from the plague. After the mass, a magnificent fireworks display follows. The Venice lagoon is illuminated with vibrant colors as fireworks explode in the sky, creating an unforgettable spectacle reflected on the city’s serene waters.

The Tradition of the Feast One of the most beloved traditions of the Feast of the Redeemer is the festive dinner. Families come together to share delicious Venetian dishes, including fresh seafood specialties and typical desserts. Restaurants along the canals offer special menus to celebrate the occasion, providing visitors with the opportunity to indulge in Venice’s rich culinary tradition.
